Ultimate Guide to Transportation at the Masters

Ultimate Guide to Transportation at the Masters

Attending the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club is an unforgettable experience, but navigating transportation can be challenging during this popular event. Whether you're a local, driving in from out of state, or crossing oceans to partake in one of golf's and the sports world's most cherished events, here's our guide to stress-free travel during Masters Week.

Getting to Augusta: Your Travel Options

Traveling from afar, you'll likely start your Masters experience at an airport. Augusta Regional Airport (AGS) is situated 20 minutes south of Augusta National. It provides a seamless, quick transition into the Masters' atmosphere. However, service is limited to direct flights from Atlanta, Charlotte, and Dallas-Fort Worth.

Major Airports

Alternatively, the world's busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), is approximately two hours by car. Boasting far more direct flights, the trade-off is a drive through one of the country's most heavily trafficked Interstate corridors (from the airport and Interstate 75/85 or Interstate 285 to Interstate 20). If flying into ATL, consider renting a comfortable luxury vehicle or hiring a private car service to ease the journey.

If you're not opposed to an extra 20-minute drive—that may very well be negated by the slow traffic coming out of Atlanta—Charlotte's Douglas International Airport (CLT) offers a viable travel alternative from the north via Interstate 77 to I-20.

Further options are available in South Carolina, including Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) and Charleston International Airport (CHS), both of which sit approximately two and a half hours from Augusta.

Private Aviation

Alternatively, private jets frequently land at Augusta Regional and nearby Daniel Field, a smaller general aviation airport. Daniel Field, just minutes from Augusta National, offers unmatched convenience and speed. Arranging a charter or private flight can significantly enhance the luxury and ease of your Masters Week travel experience.

Ground Transportation: Choosing Your Ride

Car Rental

Car rentals are plentiful at all of the above-mentioned airports, and offer flexibility, particularly if you plan to explore Augusta or neighboring areas during your stay. However, rental vehicles can quickly book up around Masters Week, so make reservations well in advance. Plan your route ahead of time to avoid common congestion spots around Washington Road and Berckmans Road.

Private Car and Limo Services

For a luxe ride and the ultimate convenience, services like Carey Executive Limousine or Van Service Atlanta cater specifically to Masters attendees. Drivers know the ebb and flow of local traffic and the best drop-off points, ensuring you avoid parking hassles and arrive relaxed. Book these services in advance, as demand peaks dramatically during Masters Week.

Ride-Sharing Apps

Ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft operate extensively during Masters Week. Though convenient, surge pricing and wait times can be high during peak arrival and departure hours. Schedule rides in advance through each service's respective app.

Shuttles

Local hotels, event organizers, and private groups regularly run shuttles to Augusta National. A perk of premium hotel rates: check with your hotel for availability and schedules. Also, consider dedicated shuttle services from the region's numerous airports offering easy, no-stress commutes.

Insider Tips for Navigating Masters Week Traffic

Unlike the U.S. Open and other major golf tournaments, where morning and afternoon tee times occur in waves and patrons follow suit (particularly on Thursday and Friday), the Masters is a far more intimate affair. Augusta National is where galleries show up and stick around all four tournament days (as well as practice rounds)—traffic peaks early in the morning before gate openings and again during evening exits. Aim to arrive at least one hour before gates open, or consider staying later to enjoy the grounds and reduce your departure time frustrations, leaving once crowds thin out.

Parking Options and Avoiding Congestion

Parking at Augusta National is complimentary, provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and, as you might expect, fills quickly. Located primarily off Berckmans Road, gates open at 8am, but seasoned attendees suggest an early arrival to secure prime parking spots, especially during championship days (Thursday through Sunday).

For peace of mind, many private homes, businesses, and parking lots around Augusta National offer reserved parking for a fee. Prices range widely depending on proximity, typically from $20 to $100 per day. Services like ParkWhiz can help you secure parking spaces in advance, eliminating uncertainty on arrival.

Augusta National Golf Club provides accessible parking areas and shuttle services for guests with disabilities. Notify attendants upon arrival, and they'll direct you appropriately. It's paramount to arrive early as accessible parking areas fill up swiftly.

Washington Road and Berckmans Road experience the heaviest congestion throughout Masters Week. Locals recommend using less trafficked routes such as River Watch Parkway and Walton Way, particularly when entering Augusta from neighboring cities or towns.

Walking

Walking can be an excellent, stress-free option if your accommodations are close enough. Rental homes in neighborhoods adjacent to the course, like National Hills, Greenbrier/Brynwood, and Summerville, offer leisurely strolls directly to Augusta National. Ensure you're wearing comfortable footwear and prepare for varying weather conditions.

Conversely, while walking from one of the many inns and hotels at the intersection of Washington Road and Interstate 20 might seem tempting, you'll want to seek alternative transportation. Some hotels to the south of I-20 are close enough to make the trek on foot, but a lack of sidewalks and an abundance of congestion make any journey along Washington Street a dicey proposition.

Planning Your Departure

Masters attendees departing immediately after the event should prepare for heavy outbound traffic. Consider either departing a day later or scheduling late-night flights to allow leisurely and less stressful exits from the area.

Mastering Transportation: A Stress-Free Masters Week

Efficient transportation planning significantly enhances your Masters' Week experience. Whether flying private, driving your rental, or opting for luxury car service, knowing your transportation options and preparing in advance ensures you arrive relaxed and ready to enjoy every moment of the Masters.
