Summer Weekends At Harbor Club: Where The Season Actually Happens

If you have lived inside the Harbor Club gates for more than a few seasons, you already know the community has quietly shifted its center of gravity. The pool and Clubhouse used to carry the summer on their own. Then The Grove opened as a 12-acre amenity campus with a fitness center, yoga studio, hiking trail with fitness stations and Sanctuary Pond, plus a sports field and renovated grandstand for concerts, and The Stables was transformed into a wedding venue with a cedar outdoor chapel. The Boathouse expanded. A food truck showed up. Between those changes, the rhythm of a summer weekend here looks nothing like it did five years ago.

This is a resident's guide to that rhythm. Not the brochure version. The version that answers the actual question you asked yourself yesterday afternoon: what is worth walking out the door for this weekend, and when.

The Boathouse Is Doing The Heavy Lifting

The center of a Harbor Club summer sits at 3991 Walker Church Road, a mile south of the Richland Connector and just outside the east gate. The Boathouse is located just outside Harbor Club's east gate at 3991 Walker Church Road, and if you have not been down there since Memorial Day, the operation has changed shape.

Two things to know. First, the food truck. The Burch at The Boathouse is officially in full swing for summer, and the food truck is serving lakeside bites all season long. Second, the schedule. Hours run Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 9 pm, with live music on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 5 to 9 pm. That is the window most residents miss. Friday nights at The Boathouse are quieter than the weekend evenings, which is either a feature or a bug depending on the crowd you want.

The kitchen is worth planning around too. Chef Adam Smith has updated the Boathouse menu with new options, including his fish tacos, spicy green beans, and homemade hummus, alongside the fried catfish, ribs and burgers the room has always leaned on. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating with a dining deck overlooking the lake, and there is a banquet room available for private events.

The setting is the other reason the Boathouse has become the weekend anchor. The marina, an Aurora Award winner for Best Recreational Facility in the Southeast, sits on Lake Oconee's Richland Creek and is a short boat ride from the Ritz-Carlton Lodge. That geography matters. You can arrive by pontoon from the Reynolds side of the lake in about the same time it takes to drive from the front gate, which is why the docks fill up on Saturday afternoons before the parking lot does.

The Weekly Rhythm At A Glance

Music acts rotate through the summer concert series on the Grand Lawn, and the schedule lives on the Boathouse Facebook page rather than the main site, which is worth a follow if you want more than a few days' notice.

The Grove Is Where The Weekday Hours Go

The Boathouse gets the weekend. The Grove has quietly absorbed most of the weekday hours residents used to spend at the Clubhouse pool or driving off property to a gym.

The Grove is a 12-acre complex that includes a state-of-the-art fitness center, hiking and Fit-Trails, a quarter-mile running track, an event and sports field, dog parks for both large and small dogs, a community garden and a serene pond, with stadium seating on the sports field and The Stables as a wedding venue. What that description does not tell you is how the trails are actually laid out. There are two trails: a mile-long mulched hiking trail and a Fit-Trail that includes eight fitness stations for stretching and strength training. The mulched loop is the one to walk in shoulder season. The Fit-Trail is more useful in July, when the interval stations give you a reason to stop moving for thirty seconds without feeling like you gave up.

Two amenities inside The Grove get under-mentioned. The Victory Garden features professionally designed raised beds and is open to members of all ages to grow plants and vegetables, which is unusual for a community garden inside a private club and worth using if you have ever wanted to grow tomatoes without committing your own yard to it. The second is Sanctuary Pond, which is fishable and quieter than the marina if you want a rod-and-reel hour without loading a boat.

The fitness room programs a full class calendar. The yoga and fitness room hosts regularly scheduled classes including Zumba, barre, toning and yoga. If you have not been in since the fall, the schedule expanded for summer.

The Marina Rewards A Little Planning

Here is the operational note that separates residents who use the lake from residents who talk about using the lake. The Boathouse Marina operates year-round, seven days a week from 9 am to 5 pm, with two boat ramps, a community dock, and marine pumps offering ethanol-free gasoline, and Harbor Club members receive a 10 percent discount on fuel. Ethanol-free is the detail that matters if you have ever had an outboard sit for six weeks and refuse to start. It is one of the few marinas on the lake that carries it.

The valet service is the other underused feature. Call the marina at (706) 817-7330 at least 45 minutes in advance and the boat valets will have your vessel ready to go. Forty-five minutes is not a suggestion. It is the difference between stepping onto a running boat at 10 am and standing on the dock at 10:20 watching yours come down.

On storage: the marina includes a 72-slip dry stack storage facility, soon to be 300 slip. If you are on the waitlist, this is the expansion you have been waiting for.

A short checklist worth taping inside a kitchen cabinet:

The Clubhouse Still Holds The Room

None of this means the Clubhouse has been demoted. It has just changed roles. The Clubhouse Restaurant, designed by Stephen Fuller, offers a relaxed setting for brunch, lunch and dinner with menus that run from comfort classics to locally inspired dishes, complemented by views of the 18th green and croquet lawn. It is where residents host visiting family who want to see the property without spending the afternoon on a boat. It is also the room that reads as summer's cooler counterweight when the deck at the Boathouse feels a little too sunny.

If you have out-of-town guests coming through July or August, the pattern that works: Clubhouse brunch on arrival day, Grove walk in the morning, Boathouse dinner Saturday night with the live music running. That is roughly the itinerary the concierge suggests, and it works because the three spaces do genuinely different things.

What The Season Is Actually Building Toward

The reason the Boathouse and The Grove matter, taken together, is that they have turned Harbor Club from a golf-and-lake community with amenities into a community where the amenities set the weekly calendar. Golf still anchors the membership. The 18-hole golf course designed by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf embraces rolling hills, open meadows, dense woodlands and curving lakeshore, and it still fills the tee sheet on Saturday mornings. But summer weekends here are no longer organized around the tee time you booked Thursday. They are organized around when the food truck opens, which band is on the Grand Lawn, and whether you called the valet in time.

That is a small shift in language, and a large shift in how a season feels from inside the gate.
